Profile
Ikuno Silver Mine 生野銀山 dates back to the year 807 and is one of the most important industrial heritages in Japan. Visitors can explore the mine tunnels and around the mine property.
The tunnels are about 1km long with displays throughout showing the conditions of the mine workers. Most exhibitions have an English explanation. The damp conditions of the mine and low clearing height at places means you have to tread carefully as you walk through. The Ikuno Silver Mine shows both the historical mining ways and the more modern mining techniques until the site closed in 1973.
Outside the mine you can hike up the mountain and visit the museum and gift shop. There are also the Ginzan Boyz to look out for which are the mannequins throughout the mine and gift shop. Apparently they even have even released a few songs.
Entry to the Ikuno Silver Mine is ¥900 for adults. Car parking is free. You can also access the mine by catching a train to JR Ikuno Station from there you can catch a taxi or a bus to Ikuno Ginzan Yamaguchi bus stop and walk about 10 minutes.
