Izanagi Shrine (Izanagi Jingu) on Awaji Island is said to be the oldest Shinto shrine in Japan. There are a lot of creation myths associated with Awaji Island and Izanagi Shrine with some believing Awaji was the birthplace of Japan.
It’s a peaceful place with a nice stone walkway leading into the Shrine grounds. The grounds are scattered with some nice gardens, various prayer points and the main shrine.
Many locals and tourists alike visit the area and pay respect to the kami (gods) Izanagi and Izanami. Entry is free.
