Godzilla is threatening to destroy Japan, the Japanese government must act quickly so they launch Godzilla Interception Operation Awaji. Fighter jets are scrambled and Awaji residents are evacuated. The self-defense force lead Godzilla to Awaji where a daring mission to fly over the beast and drop a large missile containing a drug into Godzilla’s mouth takes place. The operation is a success but it doesn’t kill the legendary monster, only deactivates him. Our mission now is to help NIGOD – National Awaji-Island Institute of Godzilla Disaster – monitor Godzilla to make sure he remains dormant.

This is the concept behind the world’s first “life-size” Godzilla theme park at Nijigen no Mori on Awaji Island. There are 4 “missions” to complete, each representing the different sections of the attraction. First enter the Godzilla Theater to watch a short but high-production and entertaining movie which shows Godzilla making its way to Awaji and outlines the site and operation. The movie is in Japanese with English, Chinese and Korean subtitles.
Now you understand the mission it’s time to inspect Godzilla up close, so head through the secured gates to the Godzilla Zip Line. Leave your stuff in the lockers off to the side, get your harness on, make your way up the staircase and view the life-size Godzilla’s giant gaping mouth 160 or so meters away. You have two choices, one is to zip line through the mouth of the beast the other is off to the side. A nice touch is that you can synchronise your zip line with your friend and be pushed from the tower at the same time.
After the zip line you have to stay close to Godzilla enter the Laser Shooting Arena. Your mission here is to kill Godzilla’s cells that are becoming active but be careful, if you hear the siren quickly duck or you’ll loose points, like I did many times! When I visited the park there wasn’t anyone monitoring the shooting arena and weren’t that many people so you could have more than one go.
Finally you can enter the Godzilla Museum, a world’s first, and showcases props, figures and dioramas from all the Godzilla movies over the years (there are over 30 of them). This impressive collection is made in collaboration with Toho Animation Studio, the creators of Godzilla. After you make your way through the museum there is a souvenir shop at the exit selling a range of Godzilla goods.
There is also a cafe selling Godzilla themed foods which makes a nice stop for lunch. An adult ticket to the Godzilla attraction costs ¥3800.
